셰일 오일-가스는 주로 미국에서 생산됩니다. 어떤 셰일 필드가 미국에 있고, 최근 근황은 어떤지 궁금해서 한번 조사를 해 보았습니다.
[1] 미국
유명한 필드와 해당 주는 아래와 같습니다. 주로 텍사스 근방에 많이 있고, 의외로 동부 쪽에도 있는 걸 볼 수 있습니다.
1) Bakken: Montana, North Dakota 주
2) Niobrara: Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kensas 주
3) Anadarko(= Woodford): Oklahoma, Texas 주
4) Applanchia(= Marcelleus + Utica): New york, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, West virginia, Virginia, Kentucky 주
5) Haynesville: Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas 주
6) Eagleford: Texas 주
7) Permian: Texas, New Mexico 주
그러면 각 지역에서 나오는 석유와 가스 생산량은 지금 얼마나 될지 아래 그래프를 통해 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 석유는 주로 텍사스-뉴멕시코에 위치한 Permian에서 많이 생성되고 있고, 그 다음으로는 텍사스 이글포드, 그리고 북쪽의 바켄에서 많이 생성되고 있습니다. 가스의 경우 동북부 쪽의 아팔라치아 쪽에서 메인으로 생산됩니다. 그 다음으로는 퍼미안, 그 다음에는 헤인스빌임을 확인할 수 있습니다. 전반적으로 코로나 때 이후로 생산량이 확 꺾인 걸 볼 수 있습니다. 그 이후로도 생산량이 코로나 이전 수준으로 회복이 되질 않고 있습니다.
아래 그림은 퍼미안 분지의 신규 유정들로부터 생산되는 석유 생산속도(좌) 와 생산량(우)을 보여줍니다. 보시면 2021년 이후 피크를 찍고 내려오는 걸 볼 수 있습니다. 생산량이 내려온다는 건 두 가지를 함축합니다. 1) 신규 유정의 갯수가 줄어들었거나, 2) 유정당 생산량이 떨어지고 있다는 뜻입니다.
하지만 제 생각에는 신규유정의 갯수가 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 것 같습니다. 아래 그래프는 시추는 되었는데 아직 생산진행은 안된 유정의 갯수를 보여줍니다 (DUC = DRILLED BUT UNCOMPLETED WELLS). 이 유정 갯수는 결국 다음 연도의 신규유정의 숫자에 영향을 미칩니다. 예를 들어 이 DUC가 적게 남아있으면 내년에 신규로 추가되는 생산유정이 적을 겁니다. 코로나 때 상황이 어려워 신규유정을 뚫는 것을 자제해서 발생한 상황입니다. 그래서 21년을 기점으로 현재 생산량이 피크를 찍고 내려오는 상황입니다.
그리고 부수적으로는 회사들이 고유가가 다시 왔음에 불구하고 투자를 더 하기보다는 배당이나 자사주 매입에 힘을 쓰고 있습니다. 또한 인력들도 구하기가 어려운 편입니다.
따라서 만약 well 갯수를 획기적으로 늘리지 못한다면 현재 생산하고 있는 유전 당 생산량을 늘리는 수 밖에 없을 겁니다. 이 중 대표적으로 사용되고 있는 기술이 바로 parent well - child well concept 입니다. 우선 어떤 유전의 경우 예를 들어보면 수평 유정을 하나 뚫어놓고 생산을 진행했을 겁니다. 만약 그 현재 타겟 유전 옆에 생산할만한 석유가 남아있다고 생각하면 추가적으로 유정 하나를 더 뚫어서 생산을 진행합니다. 장점이라고 하면 child well이 위치할 장소의 경우에는 parent well을 통한 생산동안 데이터가 축적이 되어 파악이 잘 되어있기 때문에 생산이 용이한 점이 있습니다.
다른 하나로 최근에 떠오르는 이슈는 Refracturing입니다. 만약 기존 유정에서 충분히 석유를 못 뽑아냈다고 생각하면 한번 더 수압파쇄를 해주는 컨셉입니다.
아직 전체의 1-2%에서 밖에 적용이 안된 상황이긴 합니다.

(1) 사우디 아라비아
먼저 사우디 아라비아는 Jafurah라는 셰일 필드를 개발하기위한 프로젝트를 시작했습니다. 개발 뿐만 아니라 플랜트 건설까지 포함된 대규모 공사로 한국 기업들도 들어가 수주를 하는 것 같습니다.

중국이 생각보다 재미있는 시도를 많이 하는 걸 볼 수 있습니다.
우선 중국은 결국 중국 국영회사 중 하나인 Sinopec이 지진 위험이 큰 Sichuan 지방에서 생산을 하고 있는 걸로 확인했습니다. 중국 가스 생산의 10분의 1을 차지한다고 합니다. 그리고 추가적으로 Weirong이라는 데도 개발중이라 합니다.

중국은 또 대담하게 중국 국영 석유회사 중 하나인 CNOOC가 최초로 남중국해의 천해 지역에 위치한 Beibuwan 분지에서의 shale oil 개발을 시도하였습니다. 대충 하이난 섬 위에 있습니다.
더 큰 지도에서 보시면 대충 위치가 감이 오실 겁니다. 저기 하이난 성이라고 보이는 데 위에 있는 겁니다.
작년 9월 기준으로 탐사정(Weiye 1 유정)을 뚫고 생산 테스트를 시행하여 상업적으로 고려할만한 석유가 흘러나오는 걸 확인하였습니다. (참고로 7광구는 이 스테이지에서 여러번 실패해서 사요나라..) 구체적으로 기술적으로 어떻게 했는지 알아보고는 싶은데 자료가 없네요..
